How often should you really mow in summer?

In the Alabama heat, the instinct is to cut the grass short so you can mow less often — but that’s the opposite of what your lawn needs.

Mow high (around 3 to 3.5 inches) and only take off the top third each time. Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and crowds out crabgrass. Most lawns do best on a weekly schedule through summer.

Spring lawn care checklist for Gadsden yards

Spring is when your lawn wakes up, and a little work now pays off all season. Start with a thorough cleanup — rake out leaves and debris so sunlight and air reach the soil.

  • Give the lawn its first mow once it’s actively growing, taking off no more than a third of the blade.
  • Apply an early-season feeding to green things up and strengthen roots.
  • Spot-treat weeds before they spread, and overseed any thin or bare areas.
